  The Latin word hippopotamus is derived from the ancient Greek "hippopotamos", from hippos (horse), and potamos (river), meaning "horse of the river". In English, the plural is "hippopotamuses", but "hippopotami" is also used.
  
  If you want your very own "house hippo", check out these soapstone hippos. They are hand-carved from soapstone, also known as Kisii stone, as it is hand-quarried and carved in the Kisii region of Kenya, and then painted with bright eco-friendly non-toxic paint.
  
  Medium hippos are approximately 3.5" long from nose to the tip of the tail, 2" wide, and 2.5" high. As each item is hand-carved and unique, you will receive a similar item to the one pictured. Please note that the white polka dot hippo has "freckles" on its nose that are natural inclusions in the stone.
  
  These carved hippos are made in Kenya under Fair Trade principles, and support a community group in Kenya providing education and medical care to local children.
